Avoid making the decision based only on the refrigerant label. A newer system with poor duct design or improper setup will not deliver the comfort you expect. Conversely, a well-maintained existing system may continue serving your home effectively for years.

A clear proposal should help you understand the equipment and the installation, not leave you sorting through technical terms alone. Before approving a replacement, ask how the system was sized for your home, which refrigerant it uses, and whether the proposal includes the work needed for proper startup and performance testing.

You should also ask how the design addresses your specific concerns. If one bedroom runs hot, if humidity is uncomfortable, or if your furnace and air conditioner are nearing replacement at different times, those details should shape the recommendation.
